The FSB Dean was Presented with the Contract for the Shallow Geothermal Energy Project
Minister Nataša Tramišak assigned the Dean of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering and Naval Architecture
of the University of Zagreb, prof. dr. sc. Zdenko Tonković the contract for the project Mapping of Shallow
Geothermal Systems in the Republic of Croatia - PLIGES In the Ministry of Regional Development and
European Union Funds on 12 December 2022.
The PLIGES project, from the Energy and Climate Change Programme of the Norwegian Financial Mechanism,
plans to carry out the first comprehensive review of installed shallow geothermal energy systems in
Croatia, but also to create an environment for the introduction of future systems.
The establishment of the database is the basis of the planned interactive GIS map that will enable viewing, visualization, entry and monitoring of all data sets related to geothermal heat pumps that use soil or water as a heat source or sink. It is expected that the developed publicly available tools and information and visibility activities will significantly contribute to the recognition of the technology, strengthen capacities in its application and help all stakeholders participating in planning, designing and investing in increasing the production capacity of renewable energy from shallow geothermal sources. Geothermal energy is designated as a special national interest in the Energy Development Strategy of Croatia.
In addition to the project team from the FSB with two sister institutes, led by the project manager prof. dr. sc. Vladimir Soldo, partners on the project are experts from the Faculty of Mining, Geology and Petroleum Engineering of the University of Zagreb (RGN) and the TT Inženjering company. In the last fifteen years, FSB and RGN have implemented several Ministry of Science and Education, IPA, Interreg, Horizon, Croatian Science Foundation shallow geothermal energy projects and will use the experience gained in the implementation of the PLIGES Project.
